BEFORE YOU GOHistory, best time, distance & drive time

History

Ajloun Castle was first built in 1184 under Izzeddin Usama Mungidh, a general of Saladin, and expanded in 1214. The Jordan Tourism Board describes its strategic role in protecting northern trade routes.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are often comfortable for outdoor heritage and nature visits. Reserve trails and activities depend on current RSCN arrangements and weather, so verify access before travelling.

Road distance from Amman

Route distance depends on your pickup point and whether Jerash or another stop is included; check live directions.

Estimated drive from Amman

Varies by route, traffic, stops and reserve plans; confirm the day’s timing before setting out.

Ajloun Castle and the 12th-century frontier

The Jordan Tourism Board dates Ajloun Castle’s first construction to 1184, under Izzeddin Usama Mungidh, a general of Saladin. The fortress served a strategic role in the region and was expanded into its current configuration in 1214.

Its position above the surrounding hills helps explain its defensive purpose. Allow time to explore the stone passages and views, and confirm current entry arrangements before travelling.

Ajloun Forest Reserve and seasonal nature

The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature says Ajloun Forest Reserve was established in 1987 to protect evergreen oak woodland in the northern highlands. Its paths and activities are managed separately from the castle visit.

Trail access, reservations and seasonal conditions can change. Check RSCN’s current information before planning a walk, and choose footwear and clothing suited to the route and weather.

Add Jerash or Tal Mar Elias to a northern route

Jerash is a natural heritage companion for travelers exploring northern Jordan. Tal Mar Elias, also known as Elijah’s Hill, is another nearby historical and religious site described by Visit Jordan.

Each stop has its own access hours and walking needs. Select the places that matter most to your group rather than packing the day with more sites than the route comfortably allows.

Plan an Ajloun day trip from Amman

A private journey from Amman can keep your group together and leave flexibility for a castle visit, reserve activity or meal stop. A Jerash combination may be possible, depending on the day’s schedule and current site access.

Distance and drive time vary with the pickup point, traffic and the order of stops. Confirm reserve bookings directly with RSCN and share your preferred itinerary when arranging transportation.
